To my childen,
To say I understand, ever, what you are going through would be presumptious, untrue on several levels. The first point is it is simply not true. I can barely comprehend what I am going through during this day and I’m not sure I understand most of the things I have gone through.
How can I possibly understand what you are going through?
But even more painfully, I’m not sure I want to understand what you are going through. See, your life and what you go through are perhaps your own greatest gift unique to yourself.
It is sufficient for me to say I want to know that you are going through something. Certainly you may share with me what you choose to from your life – I care a great deal and love to listen. But understand that sharing is exactly what you are doing if and when you vent – you are sharing with me your gift of life. You and your own power must determine what, and how much, of your life ought to be shared with me – or with anyone.
I don’t understand what you are going through. It is enough that I know better than most will ever know that you are going through something.
I have only one more expectation of you: I ask only that when you are going through anything in your life, whether it be a hideous disaster, or the most successful and prosperous of times, please see that I am always able to distinguish you from what you are going through.
I love you all,
Dad
